Why You Won’t Get a Christmas Gift from SIGA

And how 300 students in Nicaragua benefit instead.

No gift? You read that right.

We’re not Christmas grumps, and we certainly don’t think you don’t deserve gifts. Quite the opposite: for us, the real gift lies in the future. That’s why we prefer to invest in sustainable education and donate to the San Francisco School in Santa Teresa, Nicaragua. Because Christmas comes only once a year, but help is needed all year round. That’s why we support this project not just during the holidays, but continuously for more than 25 years.

Why We Donate Instead of Giving Gifts

Our decision is simple: education changes lives. With our donation, together with other supporters, we provide schooling, meals, and materials for around 300 children from socially disadvantaged families. For us, that’s the most beautiful gift, and we thank you for being part of this journey through your collaboration.

The Story of the San Francisco School

In 1988, Swiss educator Gabriela Schwizer and local teacher Yamilet Fonseca Telléz founded the school for children with learning difficulties. What began with twelve students in Yamilet’s grandmother’s living room is now a recognized private school with six primary classes and a kindergarten.

To secure funding, the association “Partnership with Santa Teresa” was established in 1994. Since Gabriela Schwizer’s passing in 2007, Yamilet has continued to lead the school with great dedication.

The Center Today

  • Classes: 1st to 6th grade with 250 students
  • Kindergarten: For 20–30 children
  • Free of charge: School attendance and materials
  • Meals: A simple but nutritious lunch for around 300 people daily in the school’s Comedor (dining hall)
  • Electives: Music, dance, and sports in the afternoons
  • Team: 22 staff members—mostly single women with families—receive secure income and social benefits

What We’ve Achieved Together

Over the past 30 years, more than 1,000 children and young people have attended the school. Many of them have gained a perspective for a better life. More than enough reason for us to keep going—of course, with your support.
